What Is An Orthodontic Facemask?

An orthodontic face mask, traditionally known as a reverse pull headgear, is a specialized extraoral appliance. The dentist uses this tool to treat severe cases of type III malocclusion.

RSI orthodontic face mask consists of a forehead pad and chin cup connected to a long and sturdy metal bar. This bar acts as a frame that keeps all the elements together. Furthermore, the bar allows the patient to adjust the mask to his facial features.

The facemask is then connected or anchored to the patient's mouth through tubes placed on a small element located in the middle of the bar.

These tubes are usually attached to the patient's brackets located in the molars or to a palatal expander device.

When the orthodontic face mask is worn, the device applies force to the maxillary bone. This pulls the bone forward and downward as it grows. Therefore, promoting maxillary bone growth to catch up with the mandible bone's growth.

It is essential to know that the device is completely removable. Therefore, the patient can take it off at any given time. However, it must be worn for at least 14 hours a day. This is the only way to ensure that it is working appropriately.

Furthermore, dentists recommend wearing the orthodontic facemask during the evening and night to avoid any issues during the day.

Also, the treatment time can vary between patients. Nonetheless, it usually takes around 2 years.

Although the treatment is successful, the patient might still need to wear braces for a short season after completing it.

This condition occurs when the maxillary bone is underdeveloped when compared to the jaw bone. As a result, the lower incisor teeth end up placed in front of the upper incisor teeth instead of the back.
